As a reader and a writer...
Haley learned to read at a very young age. From her parents reading to her and teachers encouraging it, she quickly learned to read. Haley excelled in her reading in grade school and was finishing large chapter books such as "The Hunger Games" by the 4th grade. Her love for reading did not stop and by middle school she was reading more books than ever. People read for many different reasons. Some only read because they have to in some English class, others read to find an escape in their daily life. Some read in order to fill their minds with as much knowledge as possible, and some read just because it is a fun little hobby. In order for someone to become a good reader, a person first has to define what a "good reader" is. To be a good reader, comprehension of a text is a must. Being able to remember what you have read and think about it is important. Being a "great reader" on the other hand is a different thing. Being great at reading can be processing the story in a different way, figuring out why the author wrote it, or realizing a new meaning of the text. Reading can be harder or easier depending on the person. Some people are natural readers and comprehend well, but others have to practice or learn ways to read better. For Haley, reading can be harder. In order to make reading easier she has to have little distraction, and be somewhat captivated in what she is reading. This can be difficult if she has to read something she is not interested in. That is what can make reading hard. It also gets hard when the text is older and harder to understand. When Haley is looking for a good book it is usually a hit or miss. Sometimes she picks books at random that look interesting or once an a while someone will recommend a book to her. She tends to like and look for books that are fiction or sci-fi. Rarely does she pick up an educational book. She likes made-up stories but on occasion she will read true stories or informational pieces. When Haley was younger she would constantly read at home but more towards high school she only reads on occasion or when she has to because of her busy schedule. Generally, Haley loves to read even though she is not the best. She loves getting caught up in a good book!
Like reading, Haley learned to write young. She did not write as often but she still enjoyed it on occasion. Her writing skills grew as she got older and she had major improvements during middle school and junior high. People write for numerous amounts of reasons. A lot of individuals have a story to tell and they showcase it through their writings. Some write to be humorous and others write with the intent to show readers a newer way of thinking. People write to educate, inform, or just to keep for themselves. Even making a movie or play requires someone to write a script. Writing is used in every single occupation. It may be hard for some individuals to pick up a pencil and start writing. In order to write well, a person needs to first find passion in a topic. Without passion you won't be able to really dig deep into a story. You'll sit there staring at your computer screen or piece of paper. Once someone has the passion, it is easy from there. The only thing left is practice in formatting and making a writing piece flow and sound better. Haley likes to do many different kinds of writing. Besides essays that she has to do in school, which she enjoys occasionally depending on the topic, she spends most nights right before bed journaling. Throughout the years she has kept a journal here and there to recap all on what is happening in her life or to rant about all the things wrapped inside her head. The type of reading she does greatly differs from the type of writing she likes. She sometimes writes little poetic excerpts or even lyrics to songs she thinks could be cool but is too lazy to finish. She doesn't have many specific ideas on what exactly to writes because most of the time she just feels like jotting things down. Haley has a very creative mind and a love for anything "deep" sounding so that is how she comes up with the things she scribbles down when she is in the mood to write. Most of the time, the pieces Haley writes she does not really show to anyone. However, in a school setting, she likes to hear a lot of criticism in order to improve her writing. She likes to know exactly what she is doing wrong, but also the reasons as to why she shouldn't have something in her writing. She thinks writing should have a lot of creative, out of the box thinking and too much standard criticism could ruin that. She does not write and home that often but when she does it is mostly in a journal. She generally likes to write, but needs that passion in order to write something that she is proud of.
